Arthritis / Spondylitis Treatment in Salford, Manchester
How We Can Treat Arthritis / Spondylitis
Osteoarthritis is a “normal” structural change which happens within the joints of the body over time. Osteoarthritis is another word for wear-and-tear, degeneration or the terms sometimes used in the spine are spondylosis, spondylitis, degenerative disc disease. Some of these terms can sound quite scary, but it needs to be understood that they are very normal and will occur at different ages with different people. In fact we often demonstrate these structural changes in the neck in our late 20’s and in our lower backs in our early 30’s.
So can we “fix” osteoarthritis. No, is the simple answer, but if we understand that much of the pain and stiffness associated with these changes is often due to the “knock on” effect it has on the surrounding structures. These are the things we can greatly help with.
When we see patients in our practice with osteoarthritis in the knees and hips, we can use dry needling in the surrounding muscles, mobilisation of the joints, manipulation of the pelvis too to enhance the general function of the lower limb. All these things together can contribute to reducing pain and improving mobility.
Similarly within the neck/spine, we are unable to change the arthritis, but by using gentle techniques to enhance the function within the spinal joints, this can reduce pain and improve movement.
